He could not get over how much it bothered him. Though Pip Bernadotte had worked for a fair amount of out of the ordinary bosses, ranging from a deranged Somalian warlord to a reserved, polished oil tycoon in Honduras, he had never had a woman quite like this for a boss. If he said that he wasn't intimidated at all by Sir Integral Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing, he would be lying through his teeth.

It was difficult to put a finger on it because so much potential existed. Perhaps it was that she never had a hair out of place or that the No-Life King bowed to her, both of these despite her age. The fact that at the age of twenty-three, her stare could floor the most hardened hero baffled him; that glare should have been forged in the fires of war and oceans of blood, not a prim British manor in the countryside.

"Something on your mind, Captain?" She brushed a strand of long, nearly white hair over her shoulder with a gloved hand as she took a drag off of the cigar clenched between her teeth and exhaled smoke.

"Kind of, Sir. I haven't been in a library since my men had to hunker down in one when we were attacked by revolutionaries in Belize." He shrugged. "I didn't expect to be helping out with paperwork."

"The Round Table is very strict in what goes in and out, which leads to most of what you see here in the basement archives." She gestured at the room full of filing cabinets and special equipment for handling vintage books. "Some of these documents are very old, so one must be careful when handling them. We have alchemical texts dating back from the fifteenth century under lock and key here. I will admit, however, that having you down here to sort and go over your men's' files as we did earlier was not my only purpose." She cleared her throat. "What are your intentions concerning Seras Victoria, Captain?"

"Eh? We're just friends, Sir."

"For now?"

"Yes, Sir." He glanced from side to side clandestinely and lowered his voice. "To tell you the truth, I'm hoping for something more later on, but for now, we are what we are."

"Romantic relations or merely someone to bed?" She crossed her arms and shifted to one foot.

"Bien sur que non!" Pip shook his head heatedly, somewhat offended. "She's a good girl, not a whore; I'm not that heartless." He paused and then added apologetically, "Sir. My grandparents raised me to treat women well; I wouldn't have been able to sit down for a week if I so much as said boo to a girl. "

"I'm glad to hear that; it gives me one less thing to worry about, though Alucard may need more convincing if you choose to reassure him and I would prefer not to hear that language again in my presence. He's already spoken with his fledgling about it and other matters. Naturally, having a history of manipulating younger women with low self-esteem gives insight as to how and when others may do it and leaves a distinct paranoia of karma if a young ward with that trait comes under the former's wing. "

Pip stifled a snicker, and then grew serious. "Sorry, Sir. I can see where that would be a problem. If I may ask, though, why were you concerned about my relationship with the mignonette in the first place?"

It took a moment for her to answer. "She is a member of Hellsing and under my protection, Captain; I would do the same for any employee." However, not unlike her hired gun, Integral Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing was also capable of lying through her teeth.

The night of Cheddar, her cigar had snapped in two when Walter informed her of what had transpired. After she ordered him to make arrangements for the girl's living quarters and have Alucard report to her when he returned, Integra had paced for ten minutes in front of the window, unable to believe his nerve. Who was he to do this, bring this girl into their lives without her permission or an explanation? She had never explicitly ordered him not to perform such an endeavor, but had not seen it coming at all.

If anything, she had felt an unexpected jealously. Alucard had been irrevocably and undeniably hers since that fatal day ten years ago in the basement. Without him and Walter, she had nothing. Was she not good enough for him anymore? What did he see in this girl that she didn't have? Her hands clenched into fists, she glared at the moon, cursing whoever in the heavens or the nether abyss had seen to this.

She sensed his presence before he entered the room, shadows gathering on the wall as he materialized. Closing her eyes, the knight voiced a question that sounded much more anguished than she intended it to.

"Why?"

"Master…" Her vampire's tone was a mix of surprise and concern as he moved towards her.

The slap rang out as her hand snaked up to meet his face, and its force shocked them both. Turning her head to the side so he wouldn't see her wince, Integra cradled her aching right hand and sucked in air. She had meant to hit him and for it to hurt, but not so hard that her fingers and palm went numb.

"I deserved that," Alucard said quietly, reaching up to touch the red mark with a gloved hand and wincing slightly. "Master, you must believe that I did not turn her for reasons of malicious intent."

"Then for what reason?"

"She asked me to; it was her choice and I saw fit to grant her that request because she resisted the vampiric priest."

"Did she know what she was asking?"

He shook his head. "Most likely not."

"Then what possessed you to do it?"

There was a long pause before an answer. "I don't know," he confessed wearily as his eyes met hers, distant and unfocused. Surprised at the pain in his that matched her own, she held his gaze and they stood there in a somnolent silence until he broke it. Her pain was replaced by apprehension when he gripped the backs of her biceps gently and bent, his lips almost brushing her left ear. "She's not you."

"Boss?"

Back in the present, Integra Hellsing blinked at her mercenary's concern. "Forgive me, Captain."

"What wonders are these? Is our lady Integral reminiscing?" Alucard loomed by one of the filing cabinets in a vaguely threatening way. After living with him for so long, she could tell what constituted as merely being intimidating and genuine menace. This was more a display of territory than anything else; no matter who the man was, Alucard trusted her with no one excepting Walter and even then, he was usually nearby.

She tsked and shook her head. "You're incorrigible."
"But you wouldn't have me any other way."

Integra ignored his response. "Did you get what I asked for?"

"They're on your desk as we speak. Shall we?"

"Indeed." She turned to Pip, who had either a remarkable talent for hiding discomfort or had become accustomed to the ways of Alucard very, very quickly. "Thank you for your help, Captain. Dismissed."  The two exited the room, the vampire pausing to hold the door for his master. Pip sighed and decided to go get a beer and quietly ponder the reason for the perpetually smoldering tension between the pair.

Bien sur que non-Of course not!

Sorry this one took so long and that I haven't been able to respond properly to comments, guys; I had to write a twenty page paper, complete a forty-two page study guide, take two vocabulary quizzes and an essay test, and give a presentation on my paper all in the same week. So, know that while I love and appreciate all your comments so much, I just haven't had the time to reply to every single one. (You can blame my English teacher who's a real piece of work to begin with; if you see Alucard, tell him I've got a free meal waiting.)The annoying thing was that my muses actually shut me out, so I had a hard time finishing what I started over break. I ended up tearing up one night because of the schoolwork and having a full-blown storm two days before my paper was due when my father, who had no idea of how hard I was working, set me off.

However, the nice thing about an imagination is that you have dreams and I did have one with my muses giving me some positive reinforcement and much needed physical contact to back it up. There was also a crackish dream where Jareth from Labyrinth wanted me to write him some fanfiction and the big four showed up and told him to get the hell out, accusing him of seducing their innocent little writer. I believe that I tried to get them to calm down, but Alucard said something along the lines of "Hush now, there's a good girl," and patted me on the head, so it was pretty much moot. Oh, did I mention that I was on a leash and Integra was holding the other end? At some point, the leash was given to Alucard to hold; I promptly panicked and demanded that it be given back to Integra, which it was.

I promise that the next one will be the last one with tons of character development and analysis; you'll be returning to your scheduled programming soon.

By the way, guess who did a really awesome thing? After that daddy-fluff I wrote last time, :iconladyterragon: was kind enough to draw us this adorable picture featuring baby!Seras and hats. [link] Awesome, no? If anyone ever feels like illustrating a scene from one of these, feel free to as long as you link me.

 Oh, you're too nice. I wouldn't make enough, anyway. I'm glad that it touched you. The reason I added this bit was because they took out the scene where we got to see Integra react to Alucard turning Seras in the OVA and I felt that it was inexcusable because the scene was key to the development of Integra's character and her relationship with Seras, so I added it. I'm glad that it went over well; I was trying for a Chekovian feel to it.

Yeah, i felt that part was missing too. It brings depth to the characters and shows a side of them you don't get to see often, so i thought that bit was touching in many ways, both for Integra and Alucard, as well as for the relationship between Integra and Seras, as you said.

It must take some anger to snap a cigar....whooa. Run, Pip, run, before the mad scary sex starts! Aaaahhh....oh wait. *snicker*

But I like character development and analysis?

Aw, yeah. Senior year. That does sound like madness, I never want to go back. I remember that paper, I think it's standardized to graduate, isn't it? Good news is, I haven't had to do anything as long and miserable since, so it's looking up. 'Salright, so long as you promise to make it up to us when you come back. :XD:

*snicker* That is quite the dream. All I can picture is you with a dumfounded look on your face, staring at a grinning Pip and saying 'So...you stole his pants?'....while Pip wears said shiny pants. *snickersnort* Well, wouldn't you?

hey, it's my socks!

Oddly enough, I like those two as a crackpairing. It makes sense and yet it doesn't make sense. Besides,I think if Alucard had his way, Integra would be locked away in a tower from the rest of the world. But yes, it made sense for me to add this bit. I was really upset with the OVA when they took out the scene where Integra is upset with Alucard for changing Seras because it was such an important part of her character development and gave their relationship more depth.

Oh, there will be some, but with more Pip/Seras goodness and not just these two discussing the relationship. Fortunately, I only have to put up with the madness for five more months and then I'll be free. Oh, I can see him wearing the pants and I'd say, "Oh great! You and Count Crotchula over there can see whose is as big as their ego." Alucard's tight pants are the reason that Integra smokes cigars.

Yes, I felt that I should link to your awesomeness because it was so awesome. You're welcome.

Hehe, I like nearly anything as a crackpairing. But yeah, I completely understand. And after all, who wouldn't want to keep Integra all to themselves?...if you thought you could manage it, and Alucard's ego is certainly big enough. Me, I think she'd eat her breakfast out of my skull for the next two decades. Really? I knew something was missing, but must be I remember the anime, because the lack in the OVA didn't make me wonder what she thought of it all...yeah, they really should have included that scene, not only is it good character development, but the lack of it makes it look like Integra overlooked it, which she most certainly would not have.

Whoo, Pip! Ha, I did enjoy Integra questioning him about his intentions!

Madness? This Is SPA-...this is not Sparta. I'm lost. Where are you going to college, if you don't mind me asking?

And poor Seras covers her eyes and squeaks, "Sir, make them stoooopppp...." while Integra whips out a cigar and says "Distinctly not. I'm enjoying this."

*grin* Gee...

Same here. The reason that I love Alucard and Integra so much as a couple is because she takes absolutely no shit from him and he respects her for it. It's one of the reasons I had her slap Alucard. You know you would have done the same.

Yes, the lady does not beat around the bush. I'm going to college at John Carroll University, my first choice. I'll be double majoring in French and East Asian Studies. And as soon as Alucard hears that, he immediately forgets about Pip and proceeds to hit on Integra with purple prose and innuendo. Poor Jareth just stands in the corner, confused and pantless.

Integra takes no shit from anyone. How could Alucard not love her? The slap was awesome, however, I'd have probably run screaming the first day....and died from lack of sleep. No Van Helsing am I. Or, could be I'm hanging around my own characters too much.

Or engage in unnecessary beating of her employees. Too bad. Pip: Er...what? Integra: *swat* You heard me dog!

Oooh. Interesting combination. I'm so jealous of the French. I'm at PennState myself. Are you from Ohio, or just coming for the college?

And she immediately puts him in his place. Silly vampire, lines are for cads. Back to bondagecard! The reflected light from Jareth's pants blinds all concerned.

I really don't know how I would be my first day on the job. Hopefully, I'd be working as a secretary or a librarian so I wouldn't be on the front lines and could happily translate things all day and be around Integra or Walter, which are the safer places. I really don't know how I would act around Alucard, but my first question would probably be "Is it true that your family was the descendants of the bearer of the Spear of Destiny?" Speaking of Van Helsing, how goes Dracula? Is he in England yet?

There should be a designated day for that; it would be quite amusing. She'd probably take most of her frustrations out on Alucard, but have to break halfway through due to exhaustion.

It makes sense; I tried to teach myself Chinese and Japanese when I was younger, but it didn't end up working out. I know people at PennState; my friend's dad worked there as a student/policeman. What's your major? I'm actually from PA; I'm going to Ohio for the college opportunities.

Either that or he and Pip end up having a discussion on the history of codpieces and share a good laugh. That is, until Jareth tries to flirt with Integra and Seras and both of them fly into a rage.
